How did “Fight of Our Life” come to be?
by Michele Abrams
It all started with an introduction made by my dear friend, Mindi Abair. In the fall of 2022, In Concert for Cancer had the privilege of presenting Grammy Award-Winning songwriter, singer, guitarist Jim Peterik and his legendary band The Ides of March for our 11th annual benefit concert. Our all-star lineup included music legends Ray Parker Jr., Mark Farner, and Mindi Abair. It was a beautiful night of incredible music that united the Seattle community in spirit and song. The concert took place in Seattle at the iconic music venue, Jazz Alley. It was a night of love, inspiration, and performances for the history books!
After collaborating with Jim and his team, I knew I wanted to get to know him better and work with him again. Much like I believe, Jim believes in the power of music to unite the world, to lift spirits and to change lives. Given In Concert for Cancer is a music-centric charity, I have always had a vision for a theme song, an uplifting cancer-fighting anthem that would exude the spirit of our mission.
In 2022, just a day or two after Jim and his band performed at our annual charitable concert, I took the initiative to send him an email, saying, “You know, if Sylvester Stallone asked you to write another “Eye of the Tiger,” I know you would. I’m just Michele Abrams, but is there any chance you would consider writing a song for our charity?”
Jim enthusiastically emailed back, “I would love to!”
My heart jumped for joy. The man who wrote “Eye of the Tiger” and so many smash hits for legendary artists and bands was inspired to write a song for us! I was honored, and I knew it was going to be amazing.
To my surprise, Jim had the first version of our song completed in a week. The lyrics and music came to him quickly.
At first, Jim thought to call the song, “Fight of Your Life.” But we know that cancer affects everyone—it is truly “The Fight of OUR Life”—hence the song’s official name. We wanted our anthem to be a mini “We are the World,” a joyous song and collaboration between some of the world’s most notable voices and instrumentalists. In 2023 Jim’s good friends Dennis DeYoung, Ray Parker Jr. and Mindi Abair joined forces with us and added their unique and notable voices to the recording.
Jim assembled some of Chicago’s finest musicians to perform the instrumentals, along with Mindi Abair’s saxophone parts. Larry Millas, Jim’s long-time guitarist and sound engineer mixed the song. The culmination is a triumphant cancer-fighting anthem with a catchy melody that makes you feel inspired and empowered!
Our hope is that “Fight of Our Life” touches hearts worldwide while raising awareness and $100,000 in its first year of the campaign.
